Stop OS X Safari Auto Unzipping Downloaded Folders

To stop Safari from unzipping downloads, turn off Open “safe” files after downloading in Safari settings. WordPress needs a theme or plugin as a zip file, and Safari unzips it after the download.

This is a browser setting. The WordPress screens for uploading a zip are the same in every theme, and the Customizer has no upload screen.

Change the Safari Setting

1. Open Safari and click Safari→Settings in the menu bar.
2. In the General tab, clear Open “safe” files after downloading.
3. Download the theme or plugin again. The file is now a zip.

Upload the Zip

For a theme, go to Appearance→Themes→Add Theme→Upload Theme. For a plugin, go to Plugins→Add Plugin→Upload Plugin.
