I like the idea of utilizing the space in the nav menu for social icons and a phone number.

You can try do this just using the menu. Social icons can be added to any menu, just add a Custom Link, enter the URL like https://twitter.com/PuroThemes and enter anything you like for the link label. For your phone number, you could also use a Custom Link and perhaps use your Contact page for the URL. Worth a try. Let me know how it goes.
