Tomas SearsParticipantHi,
Sorry – Me again.
I would like to me able to customise the look of the categories landing page,
So it shows a bit about the post on the page. Like this one for example: http://www.ccs.northants.sch.uk/category/vacancies/Because at the moment mine looks like this: http://www.kimberley-stemcollege.co.uk/staff-vacancies/
Is this possible to do using a child theme?
Thanks,
TomFebruary 15, 2016 at 4:36 pm #3073
Andrew MisplonKeymasterHey Tom
Do you know how this was done here?

Tomas SearsParticipantYep, I was a previous college which designed the site, using a different theme.
I believe he just customised the PHP files for each categories page. Do you have a child theme which I could try it with?
Thanks.

Andrew MisplonKeymasterThanks for your feedback and for the wait. I was asking just in case you knew the specifics so I could provide a similar setup.
How many categories will need this? Do you want me to create a widget area for each so you have easy access to change the contents?

Tomas SearsParticipantHi Andy,
Thanks for looking into this for me – its much appreciated 🙂
It would be good to have one for Vacancies and Latest News so 2 and yes a widget area would be great!

Andrew MisplonKeymasterHere is a child theme to assist with this:
https://purothemes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/ultra-child-tomas-01.zip
To install go to
Appearance > Themes > Add New > Upload Theme > Activate
. In the child theme is a file namedcategory-x.php
.x
must be replaced with the ID of the Latest News category as I couldn’t find it. To get that ID go to Posts > Categories > Latest News and check the URL, there is one number in the URL, that’s the ID.For Vacancies, the widget area will be added to this page.
Unfortunately, activating a child theme in WordPress changes the theme slug. This causes
Appearance > Menu > Menu Location
settings to reset. That’s a quick resave and you’re back up and running. The time-consuming part is that it will resetAppearance > Customize
. I recommend that you openAppearance > Customize > Theme Design
with the parent theme activated. Then, in another tab, activate the child theme. This will let you manually copy each Theme Design setting across to the child theme.Using a child theme really early on in your project (if you have future projects) is a way to avoid this hassle in future. I’ve been in this positon many times.
