I notice that if I name a picture ending in a number to indicate picture size
for ex: waterfall-800×600.jpg
The picture is renamed waterfall-800×600-1.jpg
Why is the -1 added?

Hi, that’s a WordPress function. It most likely means that there is already an image present with the same filename.
Here is what is odd. These are new pictures. There is no way this could be the same picture name.
Sorry, I’m not sure what the issue might be, I don’t think this is theme related though. WordPress creates a whole list of image sizes based on each image you upload. Perhaps 800 x 600 is an existing thumbnail size.
