I’d like to add different content in the top bar – specifically, I would like to put the social icons / links and some text and a link (in html)
Do I have to create a child theme and put it there? If so, which template is for the top bar?
If there another way I can do this?

Hi, thanks for reaching out.
You could perhaps try the following plugin https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-widget-in-navigation/ which will allow you to insert an HTML widget in one of the top bar menu locations. Top Bar Menu or Top Bar Social Menu.
